The X-rated film during its time did not often see the light of day, at least not commonly in mainstream American theaters. A plague to films, the X is a mark of obscenity, whether that be in the image of excessive gory violence or, more often, raw pornography. Irish philosopher Edmund Burke describes as the sublime in his book,”A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origins of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful”. The sublime to him is that which leaves no room for any emotion but horror and its thrill; a definition that may as well be a review of the X trilogy.
